Project 1- Architectural and heritage conservation appreciation

We conducted a case study on historical buildings in Malaysia: Masjid Jamek, KL, that includes information about the establishment of the building, usage of the building according to a timeline, significant historical events at the building and its surroundings, and current ownership and management of the building. Students need to present their findings verbally and to produce a research poster about the building. Through presentation and in-depth site analysis, this exercise allowed us well exposed to some of the earliest historical buildings in Malaysia surviving today. It further promotes our interest in conservation via an appreciation of the uniqueness of historical buildings, particularly in Malaysia.

Project 2- Proposal for adaptive reuse

In this project, we were in a group of 6 proposed a potential new usage for an existing old historical building in Georgetown named Segara Ninda Mansion. We investigate and observe the practices and approaches to architectural conservation in Malaysia. For us, to enliven the building and draw people's attention looking at its context environment and stakeholders, we propose the most suitable new usage of the building by taking into consideration historical significance, surrounding culture, building defects and any form of architectural detailing on that particular chosen building. A public spaces approach can be the main attraction to attract tourists to visit and maximize its public realm within the mansion proximity.
