Project 1- Site Analysis (KAJANG HERITAGE TOWN)

We were required to outperformed an urban site analysis in Kajang. For most KLites, when one mentions “satay”, Kajang straightaway comes to mind. Kajang is a subdistrict or mukim in the district of Hulu Langat, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kajang Municipal Council. Its urban area is surrounded by Cheras in the north, Bangi in the west, Semenyih in the east and Negeri Sembilan in the south. Prominent landmarks include Kajang Stadium and Kajang Jamek Mosque, both of which were constructed in the 1970s. One of its best-known establishments is Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri, which began a business in the 1990s and has franchises across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The area is also growing into an education hub with institutions such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, German-Malaysian Institute, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Open University Malaysia.

Project 2- Kajang Art Cente

Hanging clouds, Kajang Art Centre is an area which is being resuscitated in a sense to return back people life between buildings in Kajang urban context. The community, the natural features, the culture of frontages and back alleys, the sensibility of the facade are the main elements that sum up the Kajang urban context "stakeholders". Rethinking about the area and of course the needs of the local community to live in this urban city, this art centre forms a hanging features that lengthen the people to stay, to interact and intact among the "stakeholders" together. The skins are breathable, the heavy floors used are recessed inwards, leaving the intricating building structures to stand out and communicate with the urban context: the ageing tree, the community and the image of the Kajang city as a low profile heritage town. Permeability, focality and functionality are the main considerations integrated through the design intentions on how to lengthen the people in using the spaces, interacting with each other. Spaces that required intensive daylighting are placed on the higher ground in the buildings such as offices, classrooms and workshops.
